People are always looking for different ways to lose weight, from the new workout or diet they saw on T.V. to the new fat burning supplement to hit the market. Of course some of these things work for a while but then those same people pack the weight back on plus another ten pounds. Then there are those that put in the hard work at the gym and eat well but for some reason the weight just does not come off. Maybe you are reading this and thinking to yourself that this sounds like you.
Whatever you do those last 10-20 pounds just won’t come off. You track your workouts, you track each meal and you continue to go back to the drawing board only to come up empty and frustrated each time your success is derailed. What if I told you that you have a secret weapon in your battle against fat loss and it can be found in your own home? Yes, weight loss can be found in your bedroom in the form of quality sleep. That is correct getting the right amount of sleep can help you shed the excess pounds that you have looking to get rid of. Sleep deprivation is your worst enemy. It will sap you of your energy, clutter your mind so you have trouble focusing and will hold on to that unwanted fat. Improving your sleep will improve all three of those qualities and you will see a drastic improvement in your everyday life.
Checkout the slippery slope that sleep deprivation can lead to:
It’s midday and you have just “hit the wall,” you are looking for a way to keep your eyes open and get through the rest of your day. You need a cup of coffee bad to keep you going. While you are getting a cup of coffee that doughnut also looks good and you decide, what the hell let me get one. When you get home and have come down from your caffeine and sugar shock you are once again exhausted and don’t want to cook dinner so instead you order out and bring in some more food that will not help the situation. There is no amount of caffeine or sugar that will help you but instead it will put a stop to your goal of losing weight. Sleep deprivation will always have you running low on fuel and always have you looking for those foods that will keep your waistline bigger than you desire. Another problem is when you are staying up late you are more inclined to eat more late at night. These late night excess calories will add up and keep the weight on.
Getting sleep is hard to do but below are three ways you can improve and get extra shut eye.
1. Set up a bedtime routine: Just like anything else if you set yourself up with a routine it will allow you to get the amount of sleep you need. Set up a time when you will start your routine. From there you can start to turn off the television, shut down your phone and prepare yourself for bed. Your routine will soon become a habit and you will find it easier to follow it.
2. Get to bed before mid-night: I have read that for every hour you go to bed before mid-night it is like adding an extra hour of sleep. Whenever I get myself to bed between 10-11pm the next day I find myself with more energy to get through the day. Start your routine between 9pm and 10pm and snag yourself those “extra” hours.
3. No electronics: Turn off televisions, I-Pads, phones. The electrical activity and the glow from these devices will mess with your hypothalamus, which controls different sleep activities and can delay the release of melatonin which helps you sleep. Leave your electronics outside of your bedroom, it can be the difference in shedding a few more pounds. 4. Read something empowering: Yes, I know I said I was going to give you three but I this one is so good I can’t not give it to you. Most people go to bed right after the night time news. Listening to all that disempowering information can be lethal to the way you think and your mood. Instead read or listen to something that will empower you, something that will make you feel good. Go to bed with good thoughts going through your mind.
You will wake up energized and ready to conquer the day. The bottom line is when you are in the battle to fight fat, sleep will be your secret weapon and will go a long way in being victorious in the end. Now get to bed.
