There are many people that go through their life looking to the fitness training gods to deliver that secret that will get them the results they want in the gym. Hell people are looking for those same gods to do the same thing in any aspect of their life. When it comes down to it there is no secret that will just get you what you want in life. The faster we learn that the faster we will achieve what we are after.
But what if I told you that I have the secret for you that I met the god that will give you all you want if you just do one thing. Would you be in? I don't know many that could say no to a proposition like that. Well I stumbled upon this secret as I started to get more and more of the results I was aiming for. What is it you may be asking?
The secret to getting what you want is to BE CONSISTENT! Consistency is defined as steadfast adherence to the same principles, course, form, etc. When it comes to your training goals, consistency is the first rule that is always broken. How do we lose weight? Stay consistent with your diet and training. How do we get stronger? Stay consistent in the weight room. How do you get in better condition? Stay consistent in your metabolic training. How do you achieve a new belt in Jiu-Jitsu? Stay consistent in your BJJ training. It is very simple, if you are continually taking the right steps to your goals you will achieve anything you have set out in front of you.
I have three ways in which to monitor your consistency. These three ways will help you along in the path to achieving your fitness goals.
1) Consistent Evaluation-One thing I have noticed and it really should not be a surprise to many is that people do not take a close look at themselves. In order to achieve goals that you have set in front of you will need to consistently evaluate your progress and what you are doing to reach those goals. If you are not doing the right things to get to where you want to be then you know that it is time to change. The best part about this is that you are your own worst critic. That being said your evaluation of yourself will be hard and will give you the opportunity to make the changes you need to make. Consistent evaluation should take place everyday in order for success. For example if you are trying to win the next jiu-jitsu tournament you are signed up for are you evaluating you progress on the mats daily. Are you looking for the mistakes you are making and trying to fix them and make you better? If not then you are not consistent with your own evaluation and come the day of the tournament you probably won' t be on the winners stand.
2) Consistent Goal Setting- I always had goals but the one thing I never did was write them down, now as I write this I have my goals staring me down on a white board in my office and I also have a post-it of my goals in my wallet. Consistent goal setting is key to achieving, well your goals. Just like you are consistent with evaluating yourself you should be consistent with setting and evaluating your goals. This will go a long way in helping you achieve the goals you have set out for yourself.
3) Consistent Action-This I feel is the most important one of them all. In my journey as a coach I have found to be the most successful when I am taking the most action towards my goals. Not only taking the action but day in and day out doing something that will help me achieve whatever goal I have set fourth. You should ask yourself if you are taking steps everyday to reach the goals you have set for yourself. If not you need to get back to consistently evaluating what you are doing. I was once told to just start taking action, even if I make mistakes. We can always correct mistakes but if you are not consistent with your actions then you will never take a step in the right direction.
The bottom line with anything that you do is to stay consistent. Once you make consistency a habit the rest will begin to fall into place.
